About
Stay Safe Seattle (S-cubed) is a local chapter of the national
organization DanceSafe, a non-profit harm reduction
organization promoting health and safety within the youth
music community.
Our basic activity is staffing harm reduction booths at raves,
nightclubs, and other dance events, where we distribute
condoms, earplugs, general safety information, and educational
material about drugs.
In regards to our policy on drugs, we utilize a "harm
reduction" approach, which means we offer non-abstentionist
health and safety information. While abstention is the best
way to avoid the harms associated with drug use, we recognize
that there will always be people who use drugs, despite
prohibition, harsh penalties, and other risks involved. Our
goal, therefore, is to reduce drug-related harm by providing
accurate drug information and useful health and safety
services to people who wish to say informed or choose, for
whatever reason, to use drugs recreationally.
Our services are directed toward casual, non-addicted drug
users. Non-addicted users are an underserved population within
the harm reduction movement, despite the fact tat they
comprise the vast majority of recreational drug users in our
society. Many organizations and agencies exist that provide
services for physically dependent users. We hope to fill this
gap. We always refer people in need of treatment for addiction
to the appropriate organizations.
We are not limited in our scope, though, and as we continue to
grow, the breadth and depth of our organization will increase.
In time, we wish to cover more types of safety education and
partner with others, whether they be governmental,
non-governmental, or corporate to increase community
stewardship and safety.
